For this pro bono project, ftf worked closely with volunteer architects from bar architects and ken linsteadt architects to design a 3 story, 12,000 square foot classroom building with a cistern beneath the first floor balcony to capture and store rainwater. this earthquake and hurricane resistant building for the haiti partners’ academy is located on a mountainside above the capital city. From the onset, the education sector faced two big challenges: a technical one, how to design and build cost efficient schools that are both hurricane and earthquake resistant; and an operational one: how to identify a strategy that permits to up scale construction countrywide while assuring quality and controlling costs. The goal is to establish progressive model schools in southern haiti, providing education from preschool through the 6th year of the haitian basic school system. In july of 2020, we received word that one of our most important projects was completed – the children’s academy, high on a hill above port au prince in haiti. together with bar architects and their team, we developed and coordinated the design of a 2,700 square foot earthquake and hurricane resistant expansion to the school by adding a third floor to accommodate more students. the. Soon to be tucked in the hills southeast of port au prince, the haiti partner’s children’s academy is a totally self sustaining community school for kindergarten ages up to grade 12. designed by bar architects in collaboration with architecture for humanity, the learning facility will cater to about 450 students. the academy will be constructed from local materials, and it will be totally.
