Endangered Languages Information Visualization I am exploring, and visualizing, critically endangered languages with around 0 50 speakers around the world. i am contrasting these data points with the first official language of each country. Almost half of the world’s approximately 7,000 signed and spoken languages are currently endangered. this graphic, from stephen jones, ceo of derivation.co, examines the current global landscape of languages that could become extinct.

Search by country name. select the name of the country in the dropdown menu and click on “search corresponding endangered languages”. this search field can be used together with other search parameters. search results will be displayed on the map. Research teams at pratt institute and stanford worked together in an iterative exchange to develop models and explore visual arguments that capture critical aspects of the loss and preservation of endangered languages. For the first time, we combine world wide databases on language de scription (glottolog) and language endangerment (elcat, ethnologue, unesco) and provide two online interfaces, glottoscope and glottovis, to visualize these together.
