A good starting point was definitely digital foundry's control on crt video but they seem to only give suggestions as to how to best run modern games on a crt. as they note, turning down resolution in order to maximise frame rate and image quality (ray tracing etc.) is the first step but beyond that i'm unsure of how to proceed.
