These questions prompted the development of the lubuto library project (llp), a non governmental organization (ngo) that works with communities in african countries hardest hit by the hiv aids pandemic to address the needs of these children, starting with zambia. The blog of beth cramer, doctoral candidate and librarian at appalachian state university, documenting her visit to lusaka, zambia, november 19 29, 2010, where she will be observing and working as a volunteer at the international library development program, the lubuto library project. The smashing success of that library has sparked an ambitious plan by the lubuto library project to build 100 public libraries across africa in the next 10 years. that first library started as little more than an unofficial reading room at the fountain of hope, which is a shelter in lusaka. Llp has been mandated to work with the zambia library services (zls), a unit in the ministry, to develop the lubuto library model in the country. in particular, the government recognizes that high quality library services to children and youth can contribute to bringing about high quality education (sdg 4) and gender equity (sdg 5).
