I've been having issues with my photoshop brushes for a while. sometimes, they don't render correctly and it causes the brush to appear smaller than it really is, and also creates a border like a black square if i press it hard enough. it usually occurs on brushes with texture, and so far only happened to my downloaded brushes.

Check your tools option bar for you brush. make sure your overriding onle brush size and not also overriding brush opacity. additionally check you brush palettes transfer settings the control brush opacity and that the brush tip hardness is 100% hard and spacing is reasonable not 1%.
