Pretty Sure I Have A Coolant Leak Help Please R E46 Steam which smells of coolant coming from the highlighted area, coolant level decreasing faster than usual, and coolant dash light present. despite all this info many people in another group are telling me its oil burning and a failed valve cover gasket is the culprit, or a leaking heater core. My money is on the hard coolant pipes under the intake manifold leaking at the connections to the engine block. these pipes are bolted to the block so they can't move very much.

Take a look under your coolant cap and see if anything looks off on either the expansion tank or the cap itself. how much did it leak? did you see a puddle or anything dripping.
