Learn how to improve math teaching through using the focus of problem solving with step by step problems and solutions. “teaching through problem solving” is a commonly used phrase for mathematics educators. this book shows how to use worthwhile and interesting mathematics tasks and problems to build a classroom culture based on students’ reasoning and thinking. In ttp, teachers introduce new mathematical concepts by giving students new problems to try to solve on their own. the teacher doesn’t act as a lecturer, but instead observe students as they work independently and facilitates a whole class discussion of their solution approaches. Posing problems that are within students’ reach, allowing them to struggle to find solutions and then examining the methods they have used (hiebert & wearne, 2003, p. 6). In this study, two mathematics teacher educators introduced 19 irish elementary teachers to an alternative problem solving approach, namely teaching through problem solving (ttp), using lesson study (ls) as the professional development model.
